Residents at a public housing high-rise in Old Louisville are without power ahead of potential severe weather Dec. 28, following an electrical fire, Louisville Metro Housing Authority officials said.
No residents or staff were injured due to the fire at St. Catherine Court, which occurred the evening of Dec. 27, LMHA spokesperson Jailen Leavell said in a news release. The fire activated the building's safety response system, but the response "caused additional damage to the electrical system." Officials with the Louisville Fire Department and LG&E responded to the fire while working alongside the city's housing authority.
Power has since been restored to the building's first floor and residents are able to use one elevator Dec. 28, though full power restoration is not expected until Dec. 29 at the earliest, Leavell said. With a strong storm and plummeting temperatures set to arrive overnight Dec. 28, the housing authority "is taking steps to temporarily relocate residents who live above the first floor to ensure their safety and comfort."

"Residents may choose to stay with family or friends or be relocated to a hotel arranged by LMHA," Leavell said. "Residents who stay with family or friends will receive a rental concession and gift cards, while LMHA will cover hotel accommodations for those who choose that option."
The housing authority is also coordinating with "numerous community partners to provide continued assistance and support to affected residents," Leavell said.
St. Catherine Court, 1114 S. Fourth St., is among the communities LMHA makes available to the elderly and residents with disabilities.
